Whew…I almost thought Joaquin was never gonna come back from that trip he was on a few years ago. I love the man’s work, always have and this new bit of something something coming from the P.T.Anderson camp (Boogie Night’s, There Will Be Blood) has got me a little excited. Briefly…the trailer for The Master definitely takes place during WWII. Joaquin is on a beach doing a lot of things, among these fighting with sailers, sharpening a knife and making sand castles, all the while we hear his off screen voice in what sounds like an interrogation. It cuts to him seated in an office room where he is being grilled by someone behind the desk about the events of a particular time which Joaquin has no memory off. The trailer is tame, but has that forbidding that P.T. brought to fruition in There Will Be Blood. The music in the trailer sounds a lot like the work of Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) who composed most of the music in There Will Be Blood. All in all looks really really good.
Synopsis:
The film centers on Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman), who returns from WWII and starts a religion (not unlike Scientology), taking Freddie Sutton (Phoenix), a former alcoholic, under his wing.
The producer Joanne Sellar denies that the story has anything to do with L.Ron Hubard or Scientology. I really don’t care personally, just bring on the good acting. The Master is set to release Fall of 2012. Oh yeah Oscar time.
