Purity Ring is a Canadian based electronic dream pop duo, who jumped on the scene last year with their free downloads of their songs Ungrithed and Lofticries, from that point most of us who had fallen in love with their music have been waiting for a full album. Well I found out through Pitchfork, a huge supporter of the band, that their first debut album Shrines distributed by 4AD, releases on July 24 just in time for several days after the 4th of July. Still a summer release so I’m happy. Purity Ring has been this hobby of mine for awhile. I’ve been throwing their tracks on mix tapes since their inception, but still no one knows who I’m talking about when I tell them they are who I’m listening to. Don’t care! I could listen to Megan James child-like haunting melodies all the days of my life and not be sad, despite the melancholy themes that permeate Corin Roddicks hypnotic beats. The two remind me of 90’s electronica duos like Massive Attack, Lamb, PORTISHEAD and Sneaker Pimps. Torn from that same cloth Purity Ring is forging ahead with a new spin on a familiar sound, but one that’s been lacking in music of late and deeply missed by us thirty-somethings.
