I love reporting on new shit from the Greenwood/Anderson camp. Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie The Master promises to be a classic and I’d have to say a lot of it is the Johnny Greenwood/ Paul Thomas Anderson dynamic that he has to owe it to. Their the indie hipster version of Spielberg and Williams. In addition to lending his skills as a guitarist to the amazing band Radiohead Johnny get’s to really go to town on these moody P.T. Anderson projects. All I picture in the studio is Paul saying “You know Johnny maybe we can do without the Speak and Spell toy on this one”. Then again he could be letting Johnny have complete autonomy over all the soundtrack which I think works best just for creative flow. The new Paul Thomas Anderson film The Master starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams marks the fifth film Johnny’s composed. He’s done four others and all equally moody, Bodysong (2003), There Will Be Blood (2007), Norwegian Wood (2010) and We Need To Talk About Kevin (2010). Clearly he needs to be in a certain space and inspired by a certain something when he’s bending the air. As always Paul is shooting for an Academy with this one so here’s to hoping this soundtrack will get a nod and then maybe we can add Johnny to the list of Academy Award winning rockers who’ve turn movie composers. The Master releases in theaters September 14th.
