MASS EFFECT fan film RED SAND delves into interplanetary drug wars and Martian archeology

At the beginning of the year I auditioned for RED SAND and wasn’t too sure of what to expect, but low and behold I landed the role of Hido and since then and thousands of “likes” later, it has turned into an epic science fiction phenomena and a, Mass Effect fan film, must see. I knew of the Mass Effect games and comic books, but I knew very little about the back story. Well, in what has been a long time coming for newbies like me UAT (University of Advancing Technology) created this brilliant and action pack Mass Effect fan film that’s based 35 years prior to the current story line. This story is an off shoot and not directly involved in the mythos, but does have Mark Meer involved and a couple of other clever tie ins to the actual storyline. Mark is the voice actor for Commander Shepard in the actual BIOWARE video game and since has become one of the games most notable characters. The story is an action packed blood fest centering in and around these mysterious ruins on Mars. The film is directed and written by UAT student Caleb Evans. The effects were created by students at UAT under the expert tutelage of professor Paul Denigris. The soundtrack, inceidentally was composed by Mattia Cupelli an “exquisitely talented 18 year old kid from Rome” says Paul. The sinister layers created by Mattia will remind you of such composers as Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore and adds a whole hell of a lot to the mounting crisis in Red Sand. Paul and Caleb have been working together for awhile on UAT projects and the chemistry between them seems to be growing as is the projects they are involved in.

Serving as a prequel to the MASS EFFECT game series,”Red Sand” is set 35 years before the time of Commander Shepard and tells the story of the discovery of ancient ruins on Mars. Left behind by the mysterious alien race known as the Protheans, the ruins are a treasure trove of advanced technology and the powerful Element Zero, an energy source beyond humanity’s wildest dreams. As the Alliance research team led by Dr. Averroes (Ayman Samman) seeks to unlock the secrets of the ruins, a band of marauders living in the deserts of Mars wants the ruins for themselves. Addicted to refined Element Zero in the form of a narcotic nicknamed “Red Sand” which gives them telekinetic “biotic” powers, these desert-dwelling terrorists will stop at nothing to control the ruins and the rich vein of Element Zero at its core. Standing between them and their goal are Colonel Jon Grissom (Mark Meer), Colonel Lily Sandhurst (Amy Searcy), and a team of Alliance soldiers tasked with defending the ruins at all costs. At stake – the future of humanity’s exploration of the galaxy, and the set up for the MASS EFFECT storyline loved by millions of gamers worldwide.

No word yet as to whether this short will become a full fledged web series of feature, but with all the buzz it’s been receiving there’s no telling where it will go. The short has already been featured on Kotaku and Game Fanatics and word is still spreading.
