New Zealand issues legal tender in honor of The Hobbit

We learned via MTV GEEK that New Zealand is issuing a set of coins, that can be used as money (in NZ of course) and that they all contain characters from the new Hobbit film. This of course isn’t the first time New Zealand has celebrated the geek, in fact a few months ago they issued coins based on the STAR WARS film’s…shuh. Imagine having one of those babies just magically come into your possession?

Speaking to TVNZ, Sir Ian McKellen (who plays Gandalf in the film) said, “”To put Gandalf on these splendiferous coins is a wizard idea.”He also noted how pleased he is with the designs saying, “The pointy hat, the beard and the illuminated staff – the $1.90 NZ stamp is pure Gandalf.”

Mtv also noted: While some coins will be available individually, the New Zealand Post has also created several collector’s packs, offering different coins from the series.

Unlike some fanboy swag these guys are bound to be worth more than their note and will go like hot cakes so I advise you Ringers to get to the website and order as many as possible before they are all gone.
