Take the most psychedelic/highly rhythmic parts from your favorite bands of the sixties and you pretty much have the Australian indie rock band Tame Impala. I’ve been listening to Tame Impala for about a year now and they continue to amaze me with how organic their sound is. Connecting their mics to wah wah pads and giving their instruments the analog treatment, has done well for these throwbacks and now they’ve gone an added another wood to the proverbial fire with this track off of their latest album Lonerism. “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” is dreamy to the max. The Lennon-esque vocals do one hell of a job guiding the limp wristed breaks and fills. This new track isn’t so much of a departure as it is them getting ever so close to their own version of the White Album.
The video for FLWOGB is pure film school thesis, done by animators Becky Sloan, Azusa Nakagawa and Theo Nunn. Layers and layers of trippy images help propel the listener to knew heights as Tame Impala lay down hyp-mo-tizing sounds.
Made up from over 1000 separate plasticine collages all individually made by hand. Individual frames from the video are available from beckyandjoes.com/tame-impala/
