This announcement doesn’t surprise me, but Jay-Z wouldn’t have been my first pick. In hindsight, I guess, Jay-Z has been trying to harness his inner Capone for a very long time, so scoring a movie set in the days of prohibition is the next best thing. Baz Luhrmann has and continues to mash up genres like some displaced time traveler, with ADD. I freaked when I heard Nirvana in Moulin Rouge and Prince in Romeo and Juliet. It’s always been the first thing that puts me off about his films, until I can see through the insane soundtrack and get right down to the core of the story, but will viewers, other than fans, have that same level of patience required for a Luhrmann film? It took me a couple of watches of Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet to “get” the story he was trying to tell. It always helps to have a wife whose crazy about his work and purchases the damn DVDs, but I digress. There have been rumors about contributors on the OST since the trailer hit last month, the best being that Prince and Lady Gaga were going to lay down tracks on this movie, but right now they are still rumors.
According to Collider.net, singer/songwriter/producer Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts fame took to Twitter (via The Film Stage) to confirm that he and Jay-Z are composing the film’s score:
All I have to say is look at the trailer below. You’ve got Leonardo and Carey, you’ve got the amazing sets and clothes, you’ve got Jay-Z and to top it all off…it’s going to be in fucking 3D. I think it’s safe to say you won’t need any drugs for this trip.
The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki and opens in 3D on May 10, 2013.
Hi, I’m a writer based out of Spokane Valley, United States and I found your site via http://mitng.org/2013/01/02/jay-z-set-to-score-baz-luhrmanns-the-great-gatsby/. Would you have any ideas for those looking into blogging? I’m working on launching my own blog soon but I
don’t really know where to get started. Do you believe I should start off with a free site like Pixie or invest some cash into a pay site? I’m facing a lot of options and it’s all so overwhelming… What would you say?
I wish there was an exact science to this shit. I’m learning as I go and covering all my basis a.k.a using every social media outlet I can to bounce my stories back home, The rest is about being patient, but yes…don’t spend money…at least not yet. There are just too many free blog sources that are equipped with ways to get your facebook or Twitter friends joined to your site quicker than you doing it manually…does that make sense?
