Disney confirms there will be standalone Star Wars films

star-wars-logo-sliceToday I learned via Collider.com , that Disney CEO Bob Igor has confirmed that there will be standalone Star Wars films that center around new and equally as important characters in the Star Wars mythos. In addition to this great news screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (X-MEN First Class, X-MEN The Last Stand) will be teaming up to bring us those films.

Via CNBC this is some of what Bob Iger had to say:

I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too.

As you’ve might’ve guessed with this announcement came the rumors that they may do a film based on Yoda. I don’t think I am alone when I say this, but hasn’t the last five films been pretty much about our green little friend? Let’s move on.

Iger also mentions the 2015 release date for Episode VII, even though Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy recently hinted that that release date might not be as firm. Obviously the CEO of Disney wants new Star Wars movies to come out as soon as possible, but I imagine Abrams will be careful to ensure that he has enough time to make the best possible version of Episode VII.

From a fanboy merchandising aspect, this is going to be Biblical. The Con’s, especially SDCC, is going to be command central for the promotion of these films in the coming years…so yes, I may go bankrupt on this baby. I hope my wife understands.

In the meantime here’s a little something a fan put together to wet your appetite.
