Judging by this trailer, I’m sure “Only God Forgives” is going to be chock full of heinous deeds, involving more deviant and sick ways to die, even crazier than that “nail to the head” thing in “Drive“. Director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) teams up again with actor Ryan Gosling for this southeast-Asian, tale of revenge.
Julian (Ryan Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and acts as both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
A lot of eerily odd red-light district goings on in this trailer. I can almost smell the pad thai from the street vendors. The visuals are simple and darkly lit, to give you that underworld vibe. The minimal music/karaoke, ads that sickness to this trailer that only Nicolas can bring, but I think the most important question is will Nicolas and Ryan become the new Scorsese and Deniro? Not if director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, A Place beyond the Pines) has anything to say about it. Can you smell the bidding war for this white boy or what?
Only God Forgives stars Ryan Gosling and Kristen Scott Thomas and it’s written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. No word yet on a release date for this film.
