FIlm District close to sealing a 10 million dollar deal for Elton John biopic Rocketman; Tom Hardy still being considered for the lead

I think it was last year when I heard Justin Timberlake was being considered for the lead role in this film. I threw up in my mouth a little upon reading the news. But now, as production company “Film District” bids for the US right’s like their lives depend on it and “British” actor Tom Hardy eye’s the lead role, I am “now” officially on board with seeing this project come to fruition.

According to Collider , Steve Hamilton Shaw, one of the producers at Film District , promises that Rocketman will be a radically different kind of biopic.  It will be as unique as Elton’s life, told in a non-linear and hyper-visual manner.” Up-and-coming commercials director Michael Gracey is on board with a script by Lee Hall (Billy Elliott) that features choreographed features set to John’s catalog.

Anyone else getting a strong 3D/IMAX vibe coming from that statement? It would only make since that an Elton John biopic would contain all the energy he epitomized in his hay day and casting a true talented Brit in this role will make this bidding war, one of the hottest in Hollywood to date. I wouldn’t be surprised if Film District gets out bid. But FD is hot right now with the release of the new Evil Dead and Insidious 2. I guess in hindsight they could use a little “epic” in their repertoire and Rocketman could be that film. Good luck Film District!

Deadline reports FilmDistrict is near a deal for the U.S. rights with a $10 million minimum guarantee (plus a significant marketing budget) for a wide release.  Hall’s script starts at age five with a musical prodigy who wins a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music by age eleven, so the next step is to cast Young Elton.
