Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way together with Warner Brothers , is about to embark upon the path less traveled. H.G. Wells’s classic story of science gone awry has seen many incarnations over the past 70 years, most notably the 1977 film with Burt Lancaster and the 1996 John Frakenheimer film starring Marlon Brando (whose portrayal of Moreau was awesome btw).

Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) Marlon Brando

I look at this film as a sacrifice that Hollywood must make to the Gods every so often, to keep them appeased. Whether good or bad, the offering must be made. Another way to look at it, is that it had to go through this metamorphosis (fitting), a metamorphosis that has taken years to reach a certain point, “point” being a highly advanced level of VFX…notice how I left out script writing and acting?  When the film releases and it ends up surprising us on the script and acting, then I will consider that a fringe benefit from a movie that has proven to be nothing other than a lack luster, visual effects vehicle over the years.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is going back to The Island of Dr. Moreau with Appian Way partners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Appian has set Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy to pen a contemporary re-imagining of H.G. Wells’ classic novel. The intention is to make it a sci-fi film with a topical ecological message. Appian Way will produce with Mad Hatter Entertainment’s Michael Connolly.

Book Synopsis
Shipwrecked, Edward Prendick is rescued by a passing boat bound for the island of Doctor Moreau. After a fight with the vessel s captain, Prendick is forced to go ashore on the island, where his curiosity compels him to seek the truth about Doctor Moreau s gruesome experiments. This gripping science fiction novel by H. G. Wells explores themes of cruelty, morality, and man s abuse of nature.
