Trailer for new doc, Boys State is hilariously unsettling

Did you know that there’s an event held in Austin TX, every year, that grooms young men to be tomorrow’s manipulators?

It’s called Boys State and yes…politics has me jaded!!

So it’s kind of like a high school debate competition “on acid”! This event is designed to teach young men about lobbying, superpacking, filibustering, manipulation, misogyny, racism…you know, the usual. This trailer is meant to be all tongue and cheeky, but it doesn’t take long to see that this cut throat behavior is our next generations Congress!!!Btw, I understand that there’s an event just like this, not sure if it’s held in the same city, but it’s called Girl State.

I’d much rather watch that film to tell you the truth cause this other documentary is terrifying, perhaps Girl State is too…I don’t know any more! Stop asking me questions and watch this friggin trailer!!!

wildly entertaining and continuously revealing immersion into an annual, week-long program in which a thousand Texas high school seniors gather for an elaborate mock exercise: building their own state government. Filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine closely track the escalating tensions that arise within a particularly riveting gubernatorial race, training their cameras on unforgettable teenagers like Ben, a Reagan-loving, arch-conservative who brims with confidence despite personal setbacks; and Steven, a progressive-minded child of Mexican immigrants who stands by his convictions amidst the sea of red. In the process, they have created a complex portrait of contemporary American masculinity, as well as a microcosm of our often dispiriting national political divisions that nevertheless manage to plant seeds of hope. Boys State is co-directed by filmmakers Amanda McBaine (producer of Ghosts of AtticaSpeedoThe Overnighters) & Jesse Moss (director of SpeedoCon ManFull Battle RattleThe OvernightersThe Bandit). This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. A24 will release Boys State in select US theaters starting on July 31st, and it will debut on Apple TV+ starting August 14th this summer
