It’s crazy how these guys are still working! Every time I turn around, they are in something new and edgy! This is a testament to their skill! Who am I talking about? Why none other than Ethan Hawke and Kyle MacLachlan who play inventors Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison in this brave new take on the race of the century. Tesla, directed and written by Michael Almereyda (Marjorie Prime, Experimenter, Cymbeline, and Hamlet) is off-beat, but entertaining! There are a ton of quirky and anachronistic stuff going on, for instance a cellphone and laptop can be seen in some of the clips in this trailer and to top it all off, comedian Jim Gaffigan co-stars as Edison’s right hand man George Westinghouse. Tesla” also stars Eve Hewson, Hannah Gross, Josh Hamilton, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Here is the official synopsis: Brilliant, visionary Nikola Tesla (Hawke) fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition, then faces thornier challenges with his new system for worldwide wireless energy.”
From Indiewire
Out of the Sundance Film Festival, IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote, “Before the lights went down at the world premiere of ‘Tesla,’ writer-director Michael Almereyda said that his unconventional biopic of the famously enigmatic futurist was inspired by Derek Jarman, Henry James, and certain episodes of ‘Drunk History.’ He wasn’t kidding. What starts as an earnest (if lyrical) profile of the man who invented Elon Musk soon explodes into something more appropriately postmodern when Nikola Tesla (Ethan Hawke) and Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan) get into a heated ice cream fight, and a woman’s voice comes over the soundtrack to inform us that it probably didn’t happen this way.”
This is cult status people! The battle begins on IFC August 21!
