One things for sure, George Clooney (The Ides of March, Good Night and Good Luck) knows how to pick good scripts and he knows how to pick great actors. Among the line up Bill Murray, John Goodman, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchette, Bob Balaban and Jean Dujardan just to name a few. This trailer for The Monuments Men was not exactly what I had expected, but I am pleased. My fears while watching, was that it was going to skirt any real tension and instead give us the quirky, but there appears to be some real moments in the film. Although the beginning of the trailer could be a scene right out of Ocean’s 11…wait a tick…Clooney plays a man given the task of assembling a team of seemingly washed up war vets, to protect some of Europe’s most prized art works. Hmm…replace the word “protect” with the word “steal” and replace the word “war vets” with the word “criminals”….now take that, spell it backwards and drop the S. Touche George!
The film is being distributed by Columbia Pictures and is due out December 18, 2013.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.
