I dream of a world when dialogue is no longer needed in a trailer, or a film for that fact and music is used to move the story along. Director Richard Ayoade (Submarine, The It Crowd), seems to share in that sentiment, him and Paul Thomas Anderson of course. Between the trailer for The Master and this new film starring Jesse Eisenberg, Richard Ayoade could very well be headed in that direction. The Double seems odd and indie enough and has all the usual whistles and bells. I’m sure it’ll either offer a fresh new look at alternative cinema/genre or it’ll be another Kaufman rip off.
The film is set to premier at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend.
The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox, and Yasmin Paige.
Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite — confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
